FLUSHING, N.Y. —
21 in ‘21, a nonpartisan organization that aims to achieve gender parity in the New York City Council, today endorsed Sandra Ung as the next City Councilwoman in District 20, which represents Flushing and parts of Fresh Meadows.
As the first major endorsement in the campaign to replace term-limited Councilmember Koo, 21 in ‘21’s endorsement shows the mounting excitement behind Sandra Ung’s campaign after a strong showing in the July campaign finance filing.
Upon endorsing, 21 in ‘21 said, “21 in '21 proudly endorsed Sandra Ung to represent District 20 in the New York City Council. Her passion for public service and experience is the type of representation that the community deserves. We are excited to campaign alongside Sandra.”
Founded in 2017, 21 in ‘21 is a network of grassroots activists organizing to elect 21 women to the City Council during the 2021 municipal elections. Out of 51 seats on the New York City Council, only five incumbents in the 2021 election cycle are women.
Sandra Ung said, “I am honored to have received 21 in ‘21’s endorsement, and I am excited to partner with them and their other endorsees to fight for gender equality here in New York City. As we rebuild our city after the pandemic, it’s critical that women have a seat at the table to determine the best path forward. Representation matters. It’s past time that we elect more women.”
If elected, Sandra Ung would be the first Asian American woman to represent Flushing in the City Council. Sandra has been a strong advocate for women’s rights and healthcare, including through her work to bring free mammograms to Flushing as State Committeewoman for the 40th Assembly District. After graduating from Columbia Law School, Sandra worked as an attorney at Sanctuary for Families, a nonprofit that provides free legal services to victims of domestic violence.
Sandra has worked as a staff member in the NYS Assembly and the New York City Comptroller’s office. For the last eight years, Sandra has worked in Congresswoman Grace Meng’s office handling constituent services and community outreach operations. Sandra lives in Flushing where she is the primary caretaker for her two elderly parents.
