Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-Queens) today endorsed Sandra Ung for City Council in New York’s 20th Council District, the first endorsement by the Congresswoman in the 2021 primaries. Following endorsements by Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz and a slate of labor unions, the Congresswoman’s support shows a consolidation of support by community leaders and organized labor behind Sandra’s campaign to deliver a just recovery for New Yorkers.
Grace Meng is the first Asian American elected to Congress from New York and sits on the influential Appropriations Committee. Since they met while working to support victims of domestic violence at the nonprofit law firm Sanctuary for Families, the Congresswoman and Sandra Ung have been influential advocates for their community in government. Together, they helped introduce and carry the bill to amend New York’s education law to recognize Lunar New Year as a public school holiday.
Sandra Ung said, “I am incredibly honored to receive this endorsement from Congresswoman Meng, who has been a trailblazer for women’s rights in Congress. I have been proud to work with Grace to provide real support for working families in northeast Queens. If elected, I look forward to continuing to work with her to make sure that the government works for local residents.”
Congresswoman Meng said, "I have known Sandra for some two decades as a friend, volunteer and colleague. Over the years, I have watched her learn and grow, and commit herself to public service where I've seen her many talents firsthand. I have seen up close and in-person how hard she works, and how much she cares about the people in this community as well as New Yorkers throughout our city. She is the right person for the job. She will make an outstanding member of the City Council and she'll fight each and every day for all the constituents she represents. I need Sandra as my partner in government so that we can work to build a brighter future, and to make our neighborhoods even better places to live and work. I am so proud and excited to endorse her candidacy, and urge everybody to support our next Councilmember for the 20th District Sandra Ung!"
After graduating from Columbia Law school, Sandra Ung worked as a nonprofit attorney providing legal assistance to victims of domestic violence with the nonprofit Sanctuary for Families. She has worked in government since 2005, including in the offices of the State Assembly, City Comptroller and the NYS Commissioner on Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Sandra joined the Congresswoman’s office in 2012 as a key part of the Congresswoman’s community outreach efforts. As a critical part of the Congresswoman’s team, Sandra Ung was responsible for assisting constituents in the Congresswoman’s District Office. As a part of her responsibilities, she helped asylum seekers contact USCIS, assisted seniors with social security and Medicare issues and worked with veterans to contact the VA.
Sandra Ung was also endorsed by Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz and labor unions including UFT, SEIU 32BJ, CWA District 1, HTC, DC37, NYSNA and Local 831 IBT.
